Duffy’s Roadhouse in Alaska is AVAILABLE


Duffy’s Roadhouse and Porcupine Creek are: 266 miles from Anchorage; 267 miles from Fairbanks; 82 miles from Glennallen; 63 miles from Tok; and, 4 miles from Slana Post Office. Slana and the Slana River have been an established name for this area since the days of Russian occupation. A telegraph station called Slana Station was established in 1903. In 1917 a Trading Post and roadhouse were established and in 1935 the Nabesna Road came through from the Richardson Highway. A new Trading Post was built on the new road, the Slana Roadhouse, which opened up the Nabesna Mine. The mine was closed during the 2nd World War because of government regulations and the death of the owner around the same time. Don Duffy leased the Slana Roadhouse in 1947 and during that year travel was permitted over the Alaska Highway without special permit. A new Black Top Highway was in the planning stages that would bypass Slana and Duffy was apparently aware of the plan. At that time Duffy filed on the present ground which would be on the planned new Black Top Highway and began construction of the establishment in 1947. The new Black Top Highway was surveyed in 1950 which bypassed the old roadhouse. The Duffy’s and others had worked on the buildings from 1947 until 1952 and when the New Highway opened they opened for business. In 1972 new owners obtained the Roadhouse from Don and Zaz Duffy but closed the doors in 2004 and put the property up for sale.

The present owners purchased the roadhouse in 2007 with the intention of starting Duffy’s Adventures. The Slana Roadhouse, now Duffy’s Roadhouse, has been an established business longer than any other Roadhouse between the Yukon Boundary in Canada and Anchorage but Duffy’s has been closed for several years.

GOLD! In the late 1890’s and early 1900’s Gold was discovered in the Slate Creek area and some of the richest deposits came from the Miller’s Gulch and Slate Creek claims. Slate Creek is approximately a 30 minute flight from the Duffy’s runway. In 1922 President Warren G Harding and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge signed Patents to D. Roger Englar for mining claims along Slate Creek.

Some of the names for the claims of the Slate Creek Claims consisted of Prince Placer, Four Black Dogs, St. Anne, Fanny Bench, Fraction Bench, Naomi, Humdinger, St. Louis, Tacoma, Tiger, Big Star, Coles, Linn, Gerhard Hanson, Eureka, Hattie N. and Solomon’s Bench, to name only a few (the property consists of 2 1/2 miles up Slate Creek from the Chistochina River). During those early years some of Slate Creek was mined with Pick-n-Shovels with some mining by Slate Creek Mining Company who was conveyed title in 1939 and later, in 1962, Louis Elmer and the Elmer family. Elmer and the Elmer Family Trust allowed mining on the property by a few mining operations who each mined quantities of GOLD and other valuable deposits however much of the property has not been mined to date. Reported gold recovered from the area is at least 180,000 ounces plus platinum and other valuable metals.

Other mining in the area included the Nabesna Mine with an assay over 200 ounces per ton and several mining operations draining into the Porcupine Creek as well as Ahtell Creek.

I discuss Slate Creek and Miller Gulch because they are a 30 minute flight NW and Nabesna Mine is about the same distance SE out of the Duffy’s runway. Both are in the same Porphyry Belt as the Pebble Deposit to the SW and our Porcupine Creek Gold Claims and Duffy’s Roadhouse.

The roadhouse, now owned by Mac and Monica is only a “stone’s throw” from Porcupine Creek and they would walk it and other creeks in the area with a shovel, bucket and gold pan and test for gold whenever they had time. They were getting gold near the surface so they staked or had others stake all of the available mining claims for several miles of the creeks and mountains with the intentions of mining and starting Duffy’s Adventures and Roadhouse, AKA, Porcupine Creek Gold Mining Adventures.

Duffy’s Adventures and Roadhouse is located less than 2 miles from the North Entrance to the Wrangell, St. Elias National Park and Preserve and there is an airstrip at Duffy’s which is on all Aeronautical Charts for aircraft. Many pilots use the airstrip for hunting and fishing in the area as well as for flights in and out of Wrangell, St. Elias National Park and Preserve.


Duffy’s is located on Highway 1 which is the main highway for trucking and visitors who are going anywhere in Alaska south of the Alcan Highway.


The Duffy’s property consists of 40 acres which has been divided into six lots. One 5 acre lot has several buildings but we have started dismantling and removing some of the buildings with the intension of clearing the land making it suitable for any business activity; the highway right of way takes away some of the useable land but there is still a lot of land and it fronts on the main highway, Hwy 1, from the US through Canada and Alaska with over two thousand feet of highway frontage. Duffy’s is at 2,420 feet elevation and near the Wrangell, St. Elias National Park and Preserve (2 miles south) – the largest in North America.


Any businesses at Duffy’s could be open year round or seasonal as appropriate


In the past Duffy’s was a Tavern with Off Sale Alcohol, a Café, a Gas Station, an auto service garage building and bunkhouse with a cabin and other buildings which have been closed for several years. The entire Duffy’s property consists of 40 acres with the developed portion on Lot 1 which is the 5 acres; a small part of the 27 acre Lot 6 is developed as the airport and the remaining lots are undeveloped.


Duffy’s Tavern, Café and off sale liquor store entrance was located within their own 4600+/- sq. ft. building which is the building that we have mostly torn down and hauled away leaving a 1,200 sq. ft. building which has been remodeled into a comfortable home with heat, water, electric, septic sewer, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and combined office and living room space.

The five acres also contain a garage building for auto service and a towing service with a four room bunkhouse upstairs plus a 20x32 cabin. Our plans are to tear down the garage and bunkhouse building next then the cabin. There is also a generator building for backup power which is in good shape and useable plus there are more sheds and an outhouse.


Duffy’s has its own sewer system and water well along with residential electricity supplied by the local power company which may be upgraded for the planned businesses. Drilling or driving a replacement water well would be a good investment which is one of our future priorities.


Duffy’s also has phone service and the State of Alaska maintains the highway year around.


Duffy’s is located 63 miles from Tok Alaska and 63 miles from Gulkana Alaska.


Duffy’s is 266 miles from Anchorage Alaska and 267 miles from Fairbanks Alaska.


Duffy’s is 150 miles inside Alaska from the Canadian Border.

Duffy’s airstrip - runway - is on all the aeronautical charts for pilots (lot 6).

Duffy’s is located at 2,420 feet above sea level and generally doesn’t get snow after April.


Duffy’s has an outstanding view of Mt. Sanford and the Wrangle, St. Elias National Park and Preserve.


The June temperatures can run around 80 degrees for a daytime high.


Duffy’s is located five miles from the village of Slana Alaska and fifteen miles from Mentasta with a view of mountains, valleys, the Slana River and the Copper River as well as the Wrangell, St. Elias National Park and Preserve.


What are The Possibilities?


The plan should include an RV Park; 10 to 20 Cabins for rent, nightly or weekly; A Convenience Store with Fuel Station; A Cafe; Apartments or Cabins for employees and their families; An Automobile Service Garage and Towing Business; A Ten Space Shopping Center; A Car and Truck Wash; Gold Panning on site using gold bearing soil from the mining claims; A fully functioning Airport with Buildings, Service and Fuel; and more.

I also envision the possibilities to include a lot more than just the property itself. It includes:

A. Air taxi service

B. Flight seeing of the Wrangell, St. Elias National Park and Preserve

C. Gold Mining Adventures on the Porcupine Creek Mining Claims and gold panning on site with panning lessons

D. ATV Trail Rides - ATV Rentals - ATV’s for Gold Mining Adventures and Snow Mobiles in the winter

E. Guided tours of the area using the Right of Way Trail System

F. Agreements with Carnival, Gray Lines, Princess and more to bring their passengers for a Gold Adventure

G. Jeep tours up the Nabesna Road to the Nabesna Gold Mine

H. Tours of the Wrangell, St. Elias National Park and Preserve

I. Tours to the Ahtna Indian Village at Mentasta with shopping for Ahtna gifts

J. Daily, Weekly and all summer Gold Mining Adventures at our Porcupine Creek Gold Mining Camp

K. An auto towing and service business;

L. Banking and shopping for the local communities who now drive for 60-70 or more miles for those services

M. Work for the people who live in the area and businesses for the local entrepreneur

N. And more, including 100 to 220 additional adjoining acres for an extended runway and emergency services which has been tentatively approved by FAA and we have discussed it with the B.L.M. Contact us for more information.
